One crew member died during Lockheed D-21 collision

A life was lost during high-speed tests before the program shifted to B-52 launches and vanished in 1971, leaving the results of its final missions hidden.
The Lockheed D-21 was designed to fly where no human pilot could safely linger. It was an unmanned "drone" aircraft built for "high-speed, high-altitude strategic reconnaissance missions over hostile territory," a ghost in the stratosphere meant to gather intelligence without the risk of a captured crew.
According to the FAS Intelligence Resource Program page, the D-21 was a sibling to the A-12 and the SR-71 "Blackbird," born from the Lockheed "Skunk Works" program. While the Blackbird became the public face of high-altitude spying, the D-21 was the silent, pilotless variant. It was a machine of extreme specifications: powered by a Marquardt RJ-43-MA-11 ramjet, cruising at Mach 3.3 at an altitude of 90,000 feet, with a range exceeding 3,400 nautical miles.

For the first few years of its existence, the D-21 did not take off on its own. It was a parasite, launched from the back of a modified A-12, redesignated as the M-12. This "piggyback" method was the program's first gamble. The first flight of the combined D-21/M-12 took place on December 22, 1964, and by March 5, 1966, the first actual release of a drone from the carrier aircraft had occurred.
But the danger of these high-speed experiments eventually caught up with the crew. On July 30, 1966, a D-21 collided with its M-12 carrier immediately after release. The impact destroyed both aircraft. The FAS record is blunt about the human cost: the accident resulted in the death of one of the M-12's crew members.
In the wake of that collision, the government stopped the piggyback launches entirely. The pursuit of strategic reconnaissance did not stop, but the method had to change. The human cost of the M-12 configuration had rendered it untenable, forcing a pivot in how the drones were deployed into the sky.

Mach 3.3 at 90,000 Feet
To maintain the program, Lockheed developed a new launch system utilizing modified B-52H aircraft. This evolution produced the D-21B. Unlike the M-12 version, the D-21B featured dorsal mounting hooks for carriage under the B-52's wing. Because the ramjet engine required significant initial speed to function, the D-21B was equipped with a solid rocket booster to provide the necessary acceleration for the engine to ignite.
These aircraft likely operated out of the Nevada Test and Training Range, specifically the highly classified facility known as Area 51, where the USAF historically tested its most sensitive reconnaissance platforms. The transition to the B-52H did not immediately solve the program's reliability issues. The first launch from a B-52 on November 6, 1967, ended in a crash. Throughout 1968, flights continued with what the FAS page describes as "mixed success."
Despite the failures, the D-21B eventually reached its intended purpose. It was guided by an inertial navigation system on a pre-programmed flight profile, designed to scream across borders at triple the speed of sound, invisible to the era's radar and untouchable by conventional interceptors.

Rocket Boosters and B-52s
The program finally moved into an operational phase on November 9, 1969. However, that first operational launch was a failure; the D-21B was lost. Over the following two years, the government claims several successful operational missions were flown.
This is where the record goes silent. The FAS page notes that the D-21 program was "highly classified and details have not been released." We are left with the specifications—a 43-foot length, a 19-foot span, and a weight of 11,200 lbs without the booster—but the actual targets and the intelligence gathered during those "successful" missions remain hidden.
The government spent years perfecting a drone that could outrun missiles and outfly pilots, only to scrub the program from the books. In 1971, the D-21 program was canceled and the remaining aircraft were placed in storage. The record leaves us wondering exactly what those final missions saw and why a platform capable of Mach 3.3 was suddenly deemed obsolete.
