Six Airmen Perished in Overweight RC-135S Crash in Aleutians

Six crew members died amidst fire and snow after a missile-tracking aircraft overran a runway in the Aleutians while 25,000 lbs over its designed gross weight.
The fuselage snapped in two right at the rear side hatch.
That is how the aircraft ended up on a snow-covered patch of the Aleutian Islands: in two pieces, with its #3 and #4 engines torn clean off the wing. According to an FAS Intelligence Resource Program page, this was the fate of aircraft 61-2664, a Cobra Ball RC-135, on March 15, 1981. To the official record, the event was a tragedy "resulting in six fatalities." To the men who were there, that phrasing is a sanitized erasure of a nightmare.
RTOS and LATS
Public records identify the Boeing RC-135 family as large reconnaissance aircraft used by the U.S. Air Force for national-level intelligence. The Cobra Ball variant is a specialized airborne platform designed for a singular, high-stakes task: tracking ballistic-missile tests at long range using infrared telescopes.
The FAS record describes a suite of Signals Intelligence (SIGINT) and Measurements and Signatures Intelligence (MASINT) sensors meant to "exploit the enemy electromagnetic spectrum." The heart of the system consists of two linked electro-optical sensors. The first, the Real Time Optics System (RTOS), uses an array of staring sensors for target acquisition. The second, the Large Aperture Tracker System (LATS), provides greater sensitivity and resolving power.
When these systems worked, the stakes were global. The crew was told that if a mission was successful, the intelligence collected was briefed directly to the President, the Secretary of State, and the Secretary of Defense. This was a tool for the highest levels of power, designed to provide rapid recognition of theater ballistic missile launches, offering estimates of launch, intercept, and impact points within seconds of a missile clearing the horizon.

Shemya AFS
While the intelligence reached the Oval Office, the crews lived and died on "the rock." Shemya AFS, located at the end of the Aleutian Chain, served as a deployment site for the Cobra Ball. It was a place of extreme atmospheric hostility and punishing precision.
Operating the RC-135S required a level of meticulousness that bordered on the obsessive. The FAS file records that timing was synced to an atomic clock, which was sent to Fort Collins, Colorado, annually for recalibration to a ten-thousandth of a second. The aircraft’s alignment was checked with a theodolite against a known point on the hangar floor. The tolerances were so tight that if a single person walked on a wing after alignment, the entire system had to be reset.
Yet this precision existed in a landscape of chaos. Crew members recalled responding to klaxons, taxiing in radio silence, and sprinting to mission areas at FL240. The aircraft were pushed to their physical limits; extra antennas caused flutter over the elevator above Mach .82, and the crews flew into weather that one former maintenance superintendent described as "awful, at best."

The failure of aircraft 61-2664 was not a failure of the atomic clock or the theodolite, but a failure of the environment and the margin of safety. On that March night, the winds were blowing across the runway at over 40 mph. The aircraft overran the runway, veered right, and broke apart.
In the official summary, the loss of six lives is the primary data point. But the accounts from the men on the ground—Dave Loomis, a maintenance superintendent, and Larry Becker, a Wing Weather Officer—paint a different picture. They describe 19 aircrew men stumbling through a blizzard in the dark, scattered among the wreckage. Because the aircraft had departed the runway to the south, it stopped beyond the reach of the fire department's crash trucks. The men on the ground had to watch the plane burn itself out because they could not reach it with firefighting equipment.
Six men died. Some were killed on impact; others died in a small dispensary staffed by independent duty technicians who were trained for minor injuries and colds, not the catastrophic trauma of a fuselage snap. The survivors were plucked from the snow and howling winds by rescue crews whose efforts, according to Lt Col Becker, have not been sufficiently acknowledged.
There is a coldness in the way the government records these platforms—as "suites" and "systems"—that obscures the reality of the men who operated them. The RC-135S was a marvel of MASINT sensor integration, but it was also a 210,000-pound mass of metal being forced into a short runway in the Aleutians.
During recovery at Shemya, the aircraft was dumped down to a landing gross weight of 210,000 lbs., which the record notes was 25,000 lbs. over the designed gross weight.
