Black Pony crews traded observation for 6,000-round minigun strikes

The Mekong Delta's jagged reality was smoothed over by official records to mask how the Black Pony used observation planes for direct aggression.
The OV-10 Bronco was marketed as a tool of observation. It was a twin-turboprop aircraft designed for the Marines, born from a tri-service program involving the Air Force and Navy to create a platform capable of short take-offs and landings. On paper, its utility was broad: visual reconnaissance, cargo transport for five paratroopers, or the evacuation of two litter patients. It could land on aircraft carriers without the need for catapults, a versatility that made it an attractive asset for the fluid, often chaotic environments of Southeast Asia.
But the official narrative of a "multi-purpose, light attack aircraft" often smooths over the jagged reality of how these planes were actually used in the field. While the U.S. Air Force primarily viewed the Bronco as a forward air control (FAC) aircraft—a way to spot targets and direct the heavier hammers of the fleet—the actual application in the Mekong Delta and beyond shifted rapidly toward direct aggression.
VAL-4 and the Black Pony
Much of the official record focuses on the Marine Corps' observation squadrons or the Air Force's FAC missions. However, an FAS Intelligence Resource Program page contains a correction to this history, provided by Arthur E. Savard, a retired Commander in the USNR and a "plank-owner" of a specific Navy unit. Savard notes that the standard history misses a critical piece: Light Attack Squadron Four, known as the Black Pony.
Public records establish that VAL-4 was a Light Attack Squadron of the U.S. Navy, formed on January 3, 1969, and disestablished on April 10, 1972. Savard’s account specifies that the squadron was formed in October 1968 at NAS North Island and arrived in-country by April 1969. The existence of VAL-4 highlights a gap between the strategic descriptions of the OV-10 as a reconnaissance tool and the operational necessity of dedicated light attack units.
For the Black Pony, the mission was not merely to watch, but to strike. Savard describes their role as providing close air support to "brown water contemporaries." In the riverine warfare of the Delta, where the lines between land and water blurred, the Bronco became a primary instrument of violence for those operating in the narrow waterways.

Zuni and the Suu-11
When the Bronco shifted from observation to "close air support," its payload changed. The FAS program description lists the specific hardware that turned these reconnaissance planes into gunships. The Black Pony utilized Zuni rockets, the Suu-11 minigun, and Mark 4 20 mm pods, with the latter two carrying 6,000 rounds each. They also deployed 2.75 rockets.
This transition from "visual reconnaissance" to "ground attack" is a common trajectory in the history of aerial warfare. An aircraft is introduced to provide "eyes in the sky," but the impulse of the military command is almost always to give those eyes a trigger. The OV-10’s ability to fly low and slow made it an ideal platform for this shift, allowing pilots to spot targets and eliminate them in a single pass.
The Marine Corps mirrored this evolution. While they maintained two observation squadrons consisting of nine OV-10As and nine OV-10Ds, the nature of the missions evolved. The OV-10D was specifically designed for night observation, moving the aircraft further away from the daylight reconnaissance of its predecessors and closer to a specialized nocturnal predator.

As the conflict in Vietnam ended, the Bronco's role continued to evolve through technical modifications. The FAS record describes the development of the Night Observation Gunship (NOGS), a modified OV-10A. This version integrated a turreted FLIR (Forward Looking Infrared) sensor and a turreted M-197 20-mm gun that was "slaved to the FLIR aimpoint." This allowed the pilot to lock onto a heat signature and engage the target with precision, a precursor to the NOS OV-10D, which added a laser designator to the array.
This progression—from simple observation to miniguns, then to infrared sensors and laser targeting—tracks the broader trend of the era: the drive toward "smart" warfare where the human observer is increasingly mediated by a sensor. The aircraft that began as a way to carry paratroopers or spot artillery ended its American life as a sophisticated weapon system designed to find and destroy targets in total darkness.
The United States eventually phased the OV-10 out of the Marine Corps in 1995. Despite its removal from the U.S. inventory, the FAS mirror notes that other countries continue to operate the Bronco.
